Seal it to keep it

Nourybond®delivers greater longevity in the mobility sector.

I’m going to drive this car until it rusts away: That’s the  intention of some car owners anyway, until the technical inspection is due, and the chances of older vehicles being  approved are not so good. But thanks to more and more plastics being built into today’s vehicles, the days of the  rust-ridden car are almost over. In the modern automobile, some 25 percent of the more than 7,000 components are  made of plastic, and the number is rising.

However, metal remains an integral part of automotive construction. More than half of the modern car consists of steel and ferrous materials. For the parts of the bodywork that are exposed in the event of a crash, steel remains the primary component. But there is more than one kind of steel: With the addition of metals such as manganese, nickel, and chrome, steel manufacturers have reacted to the increasingly sophisticated requirements of the car makers. They have adapted their products and now contribute to significant weight savings and, as a result, to lower fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions from modern cars. This means that even in the future, steel will have a role to play: In the coming 30 years, the steel sector anticipates the value of orders from the European automotive industry alone to increase by approximately 25 percent; most of this material will be processed to form new high-tensile, lightweight construction steel for automotive bodywork. Steel in automobiles, however, has one distinct disadvantage: If not treated properly, the vehicle can be prone to rust after a short time. For this reason, once cars are painted, they are sealed with a paste made of PVC plastisol, which protects all metal interfaces against penetration by water. This lightweight coating also seals the underbody of the car where it protects the chassis against grit (stone-chipping) and dirt even at high speeds and minimizes corrosion.

The Nourybond® binding agent product line from Evonik´s business line Crosslinkers  is the world’s largest range of high-performance adhesion promoters for automotive PVC plastisols. When used in PVC plastisol formulations, the Nourybond® adhesion promoters ensure significantly improved adhesion of plastisols to automotive-grade primed metal surfaces and make the vehicle waterproof. Extensive testing has proven that Nourybond® fully meets the diverse technical requirements of the many OEMs.
