Pathogens lurk everywhere. About 80 percent
of all infections are transmitted via the hands - when shaking hands, when opening a door, when touching surfaces and much more. If you touch a contaminated surface and then put your hand on your face, the pathogens can penetrate the body via the conjunctiva of the eyes as well as the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose, thus triggering a disease. To protect against infection, careful hand hygiene should therefore never be neglected in everyday life at home. Regular hand washing with standard soap has proven to be a simple but effective health method.
In medical facilities such as doctors’ surgeries and hospitals, on the other hand, so-called “hygienic” hand disinfection with professional disinfectants is one of the most important measures for killing pathogens on the skin before and after contact with patients and their immediate surroundings. Today, however, no one has to keep their hands in aggressive chlorinated lime solution for at least five minutes, as the doctor and founder of modern hand disinfection Ignaz Semmelweis demanded from his colleagues at the General Hospital in Vienna in the middle of the 19th century. Nowadays, this is done more gently and faster.
