Improving consumer safety

For most people, reaching for a deodorant has become a fixed part of their daily morning care routine. Hardly anyone would leave the house these days without applying deodorant. This behaviour is also reflected by figures. So the Europe deodorant market is expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate of 10.9% until 2027, reaching a value of Euro 7,539.83 million. The trend is favouring deodorant sprays which are the most popular product format among European consumers. 

When purchasing a deodorant spray, almost every consumer pays attention to a product which smells good, looks good, and feels pleasant to the skin. Hardly anyone thinks about the tin can itself. Hand on heart – how many consumers know that the internal coating of canned cosmetic products plays a vital role by ensuring the safety of the product for human application? As in the food industry, the internal coating of cans in the cosmetic sector also helps to prevent any interaction between the metal container and the actual content.

In order to avoid that damaging substances can enter the body through dermal contact, responsible businesses take product safety seriously and have given voluntary commitment to reduce the use of potentially harmful materials. From the very beginning, Evonik played a major role in the development of polyurethane (PU)-based crosslinkers for eco-friendly powder coatings with low volatile organic components (VOC) to protect the consumer. One example is VESTAGON® EP-B 1190 from Evonik's Crosslinkers Business Line, which has even been approved for direct food contact by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – and therefore also for the use in cosmetic cans, of course.

VESTAGON® EP-B 1190 is a highly functional blocked PU crosslinker which ensures a higher surface hardness, while giving the can flexible strength during the production process and improved resistance from any impact to the outside of the can. The product is fully in line with the trend of the coating industry to provide eco-friendly end products that help to improve consumer safety.
