Mono- and difunctional reactive diluents
Epodil® comprises reactive and non-reactive diluents for epoxy resin systems where they efficiently reduce viscosity besides other advantages.
Epodil® diluents from Evonik fall into two categories: reactive and non-reactive diluents. Reactive diluents are formulated to reduce the viscosity of typical epoxy resins without significantly impacting performance properties. Incorporating reactive diluents into your resin will improve handling and ease of application due to the reduced viscosity. Evonik recently increased its offering of monofunctional, difunctional, and multifunctional reactive diluents. These reactive diluents are broadly used in metal coatings, concrete coatings, repair and bonding compounds, adhesives and composites.
Epodil non-reactive diluents have the advantage of being used on either the A (resin) side or the B (curing agent) side for formulating flexibility. Epodil® LV5 diluent can not only decrease the viscosity of the resin or curing agent, but decrease surface tension for improved surface wetting and add hydrophobic character to the formulation, which often results in improved water tolerance.
Product Portfolio
Epodil® 733 is a tri-functional reactive diluent. It is glycerol triglycidyl ether. Epodil® 733 maintains high crosslink density and physical properties. Epodil® 733 is most commonly used in adhesives and composites.
Epodil® 741 reactive diluent is a technical grade of butyl glycidyl ether. It is a monofunctional reactive diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems.
Epodil® 741HP is a refined grade of butyl glycidyl ether used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. It is a monofunctional reactive diluent which provides maximum viscosity reduction with minimum loss of properties. The low viscosity enhances filler substrate and reinforcement wetting properties, and Epodil® 741HP is therefore particularly useful for the formulation of solvent-free coatings and laminating systems.
Epodil® 742 reactive diluent is cresyl glycidyl ether (CGE). It is a monofunctional reactive diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. Since monofunctional diluents, in general, cause molecular weight chain termination, the minimum amount necessary to achieve the desired viscosity reduction should be used.
Epodil® 746 reactive diluent is an aliphatic glycidyl ether, specifically 2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether (EHGE). The product is a monofunctional reactive diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. Since monofunctional diluents, in general, cause molecular weight chain termination, the minimum amount necessary to achieve the desired viscosity reduction should be used.
Epodil® 747 reactive diluent is an aliphatic glycidyl ether comparable to Epoxide 7.1 It is a monofunctional reactive diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. Since monofunctional diluents, in general, cause molecular weight chain termination, the minimum amount necessary to achieve the desired viscosity reduction should be used.
Epodil® 748 reactive diluent is an aliphatic glycidyl ether, comparable to Epoxide 8.¹ It is a monofunctional reactive diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. Since monofunctional diluents, in general, cause molecular weight chain termination, the minimum amount necessary to achieve the desired viscosity reduction should be used.
Epodil® 749 is a neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. It is a difunctional reactive diluent, which provides good viscosity reduction with minimal reduction in physical properties.
Epodil® 750 reactive diluent is a technical grade of the diglycidyl ether of 1,4-butanediol. It is a difunctional reactive diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. It will react completely with curing agents and become part of the final crosslinked polymer network. As a result, maximum viscosity reduction can be obtained with physical and performance properties similar to those obtained with standard unmodified epoxy resins.
Epodil® 757 reactive diluent is a technical grade of the glycidyl ether of cyclohexane dimethanol. The product is a cycloaliphatic difunctional reactive diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems.
Epodil® 759 reactive diluent is an aliphatic glycidyl ether (C12–C13). The product is a monofunctional reactive diluent used to reduce the viscosity of epoxy resin systems. Since monofunctional diluents, in general, cause molecular weight chain termination, the minimum amount necessary to achieve the desired viscosity reduction should be used.
Epodil® 761 reactive diluent is an aromatic monofunctional diluent of p-tertiary butyl phenol. It provides excellent compatibility with epoxy resins and good retention of physical properties. Epodil® 761 is often used in flooring, coatings, and mortar applications.
Epodil® 762 is a tri-functional reactive diluent. It is trimethylol propane triglycidyl ether. Epodil® 762 is often used as a lower viscosity alternative to Epodil® 733 but also brings improved impact resistance. Epodil® 762 provides very good retention of properties.
Epodil® 781 reactive diluent is a monofunctional diluent. Epodil® 781 is a glycidyl ester of neodecanoic acid. Epodil® 781 is sometimes used as a performance alternative for Epodil® 748, with a tradeoff in some mechanical properties.
Epodil® 794 reactive diluent is a difunctional reactive diluent for epoxy systems. Epodil® 794 is resorcinol digylcidyl ether. Epodil® 794 has excellent compatibility with the epoxy system and very good retention of properties. Epodil® 794 may crystallize at room temperature but will return to its normal clarity after warming to 100-140 °F for approximately 1 hour.
Epodil® LV5 diluent is a chemically inert, low viscosity liquid hydrocarbon resin. It is soluble in and compatible with a wide variety of epoxy resins as well as most curing agents. Epodil® LV5 diluent is a specialized additive enhancing the performance properties of a formulated system and should be added at relatively low loadings, in the order of 5 to 15 phr. Epodil® LV5 diluent acts as a surface tension reducer, as a pigment wetting aid, and as an adhesion promoter.
